Mission

As the Head of R&D Proton therapy Engineering at IBA, you will play a crucial role in the development and lifecycle management of the various modules of our proton therapy solutions. You will lead the engineering teams to deliver cutting-edge, innovative, reliable and future-proof components. Your mission includes fostering talent development and proactively addressing technological obsolescence to maintain IBA’s leadership in proton therapy innovation.

This leadership role demands a balanced focus on both strategic and operational execution, ensuring that engineering plans align with broader business objectives while meeting specific research and development needs.

Challenges we trust you with

  • Engineering Strategy and Operational Leadership: As a key contributor to the product strategy, you will define and drive the operational plans for the hardware components of proton therapy systems. You will ensure these plans align with IBA’s overall product goals and address the evolving needs of the market. Your leadership will directly impact the medium-term achievement of engineering and product objectives, making you accountable for the successful execution o both hardware and software development within the proton therapy engineering function.
  • Challenge Module Requirements: Critically evaluate received module requirements and interfaces to ensure they meet project goals and quality standards.
  • Define Internal Architecture: Develop the internal architecture of modules in alignment with module requirements, targeting metrics such as obsolescence, reliability, manufacturing, installation, service costs, and other quality attributes (x-ities).
  • Flow Down Requirements & Module Development: Translate module requirements into detailed technology (software and hardware) specifications. You will be fully accountable for the day-to-day execution of these developments, ensuring that engineering teams meet their deliverables on time and within scope. Oversee the development of the module, ensuring it meets all requirements. As a leader, you will embody a strong sense of accountability for both the strategy and execution within your remit. You will ensure that engineering deliverables are met, issues are addressed promptly, and the team operates with a strong commitment to quality and performance.
  • Modules integration & verification: Specify and develop simulators for interfaced modules as required for the factory verification strategy. Verify that the module meets both functional and non-functional requirements. Collaborate with systems engineering and other cross-functional teams to ensure the seamless integration of the modules into the broader proton therapy systems.
  • Lifecycle Management: Proactively monitor and address risks related to technological obsolescence in hardware components. You will ensure that the systems and components being developed are aligned with the latest technological advancements and that IBA remains competitive in delivering state-of-the-art protontherapy solutions. Your strategic foresight in identifying obsolescence risks will be crucial in ensuring long-term product viability.
  • Configuration Management: Maintain configuration management at the Configuration Item (CI) level to ensure consistency and traceability.
  • Team Development and Talent Management: Build and manage a high-performing team. You will be responsible for identifying and nurturing the talent required to meet the current and future demands of engineering development in proton therapy systems. Your role includes fostering a collaborative and innovative environment that enables your team to excel in delivering top-tier hardware solutions.

What we value

  • Educational Background: Master’s or Ph.D. in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science or related field).
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in a hardware and software engineering leadership role, with proven expertise in product development, lifecycle management, and team leadership. Experience in medical devices, healthcare technology, or another highly regulated industry is strongly preferred.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of hardware and software development, from initial design and prototyping to final testing and integration into complex systems. Experience managing hardware obsolescence and implementing future-proofing strategies in high-tech environments is essential.
  • Operational Leadership: Strong operational leadership experience, with a demonstrated ability to define, execute, and drive the realization of engineering plans. Proven experience in managing the medium-term objectives of a hardware and software development function.
  • Talent Development: Proven track record of building and developing high-performing engineering teams, with a focus on nurturing talent and driving innovation within a collaborative environment.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of interfacing effectively with cross-functional teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  • Accountability: A results-driven leader with a high sense of accountability for team performance, project outcomes, and the successful delivery of engineering goals.
